Rats - "rats" Dan Warburton

After studies at Cambridge University and a Harkness Fellowship to pursue a doctorate in Composition at the Eastman School of Music (Rochester NY), Dan Warburton settled in Paris in 1988.

In 1992 he was awarded the Lili Boulanger Prize for Composition, and subsequently was commissioned to write for the Composers Ensemble (UK) and the Newt Hinton Ensemble (NL).

Since 1997 he has been Editor in Chief of the Paris Transatlantic web magazine (www.paristransatlantic.com), and also writes regularly for The Wire (UK) and Signal To Noise (US).

As a performer he has recorded with Jean-Luc Guionnet, Edward Perraud, François Fuchs, Bruno Meillier, Eric La Casa, Nikos Veliotis, Fred Blondy, Martine Altenburger, Jean Sé Mariage, Arthur Doyle and Reynols, for labels including Tzadik, Wergo, Leo, Ayler, Chloe, Absurd, Durtro, SMI and Crouton. He has also performed with John Butcher, Hans Tammen, Radu Malfatti, Kyle Bruckmann, Scott Rosenberg, Greg Kelley, Bhob Rainey, Tetuzi Akiyama, Daniel Erdmann, Bertrand Gauguet, Bertrand Denzler and Pascal Battus.

Edward Perraud

Self-taught as a rock drummer, Edward Perraud studied contemporary music at the Conservatoire National in Paris as well as IRCAM, all the while being pushed towards free improvisation by his work as a jazz drummer. Since his first recording with Shub Niggurath in 1990, his projects have continued to multiply: the duos with Calx (with Jean-Luc Guionnet), Big (with Fred Galiay), Y (with Pascal Battus) and Rats (with Dan Warburton); the quartet Return Of The New Thing (with Guionnet, Warburton and François Fuchs); the quintet Hubbub (with Guionnet, Fred Blondy, Jean-Sé Mariage and Bertrand Denzler); the trio Das Kapital (with Hasse Poulsen and Daniel Erdmann); a quartet with Sylvain Kassap, Hélène Labarrière and Didier Petit..

He has also performed with Damo Suzuki, recorded with Arthur Doyle and studied Indian Music with Biplab Battacharrya in Calcutta, and is currently preparing "Tempsion" for the IDEAL Festival (March 2004) and a Europe-wide tour with Yves Robert and Didier Petit. See Interviews (Improjazz January 2002 and June 2003 and Jazzman December 2001).
