28 juil. 2008, 21:00 09:00 PM - The Lot, Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Burt/MacDonlad 6tet with Lol Coxhill
4-6 Grassmarket, Edinburgh,, EH1 2JU - £8

A rare opportunity to hear a true pioneer of soprano saxophone collaborate with one of Scotland’s most enquiring ensembles. Utilising their well-honed approach to melodic composition and spontaneous cutting-edge improvisation, Burt/MacDonald sound worlds can move from neo-minimalist stasis to warped liturgical propellant jazz in an instant while retaining a sense of space and melody. Over the past ten years they have released 10 CDs, toured and broadcast internationally and collaborated with some of the world’s leading improvising musicians while consistently attempting to take their music into new areas. This concert sees them reunited for the first time in 4 years with one of their most influential collaborators, Lol Coxhill, in a unique concert that will showcase new material specially written for this event. Burt/MacDonald’s approach, that explores the ambiguities and boundaries of what is conventionally seen as composition and improvisation, influenced by pop and folks traditions, make Coxhill a perfect collaborator. “There are very few versatile artists that hold the importance Lol Coxhill has in European improvised music. His highly personal style on soprano and tenor saxophone (fluent, lyrical yet capable of shrieking outbursts), his ability to perform with everyone and in every style, from jazz standards to the weirdest electro-acoustic improv, backed by his enduring sense of humour, all draw the figure of a maverick musician." - François Couture, All Music Guide Coxhill is one of Britain’s greatest ambassadors of creative music, a star of stage (Brotherhood of Breath, the Damned, the Dedication Orchestra, The Melody Four, etc, etc) screen (Jarman’s Caravaggio, Sally Potter’s Orlando) and Radio, (who can forget his passionate rendition of Murder in the Air?). www.the-lot.co.uk
